Symptoms of neck pain

There are many symptoms you might experience with your neck pain, and all of them can vary in severity from mild to excruciating... Here are a few of the most commonly experienced symptoms of, and accompanying, neck pain:

​

  • pain in the neck - can be constant, or can come and go
     

  • sudden pain in the neck or pain that gradually gets worse over time
     

  • pain felt in the upper back, tops of shoulders, into the arms, and/or into the head
     

  • a dull ache in the neck, shoulders, and/or upper back, which is sometimes accompanied by muscle spasms as well as reduced mobility
     

  • a sharp pain in your neck after you have experienced some kind of injury
     

  • pain in the neck which seems to worsen as you sit or lie down for a longer period of time
     

  • neck pain which changes in response to alternating positions
     

  • neck pain which seems severe when you first wake up, and then eases after you’ve moved around awhile
     

  • a numb or tingling sensation - can present in neck, upper back, arms, and/or hands
     

  •  stinging, prickling, or burning pain in the neck and/or upper back, which usually occurs on one side of the body, and can radiate up into the head and/or down into arms and hands. 

Causes of neck pain
