Acupuncture for Allergies

Acupuncture can be very effective for treating symptoms related to allergies

Acupuncture treatment for allergies works in many ways. First, it can have an immediate effect on symptoms - typically we are able to open up the sinuses to relieve congestion, reduce sinus pressure, relieve headache, and reduce itchy or burning eyes right away so you leave the treatment room feeling much improved!

Then, we also help to reduce the frequency and severity of your allergy symptoms by helping the body mediate itself. Acupuncture can help reduce the histamine response, as well as help the liver to process out systemic histamines, and greatly reduce the inflammatory response.

Acupuncture is often effective for treatment of allergies even when medications and other methods  have failed or no longer work.

Acupuncture treatment for asthma can help you to breathe easier and need your inhaler less. Acupuncture for asthma aims to reduce inflammation as well as modulate the nervous system's response that causes the smooth muscle constriction of the airways. Acupuncture is not a replacement for your inhaler, nor is it a treatment for an acute asthma attack, however it has great success at reducing the frequency and severity of asthma attacks so that patients don't need their inhalers as often.

Often with asthma, people also have other contributing conditions or factors like sinus and/or food allergies and autoimmune conditions (to name a couple), that their acupuncture treatment plan will also address.

Treatment of dizziness & vertigo could be placed in many categories because there are several causes for them. Causes include: sinus congestion - especially when pressing on the eustachian tubes, excess mucus causes by upper respiratory infection, ear infection, displaced crystals in inner ear, anemia, low blood pressure, and even muscle tension.

Acupuncture for dizziness & vertigo can effectively treat all of these causes - at your visit we will do an evaluation to see what is causing, and contributing to, your dizziness and/or vertigo so that we can employ the proper treatment to get you feeling better quickly.

Acupuncture for Tinnitus

Acupuncture treatment for tinnitus, or ringing in the ears can be very effective. There are many causes of tinnitus including:

High Blood Pressure

Nerve Damage

Ear Infection

Fluid Blockage

Tense Muscles

Meniere's Disease

Poor Blood Flow

Hormone Imbalance

Other Systemic Conditions

Because of the wide variety of causes, there is a wide variety of treatment approaches - some of which acupuncture can be very effective for, and others that yeild mixed results.

Blood, pressure, fluid blockage, muslce tension, blood flow, and respiratory invovlement can all be effectively addressed and treated with acupuncture.

Nerve damage, certain hormonal imbalances, and some systemic conditions have a mixed bag of results.

Nerve damage, depending on the extent of the damage, can be effectively treated with acupuncture, however, it can take a long time. Nerve regeneration, in an area with scar tissue and/or poor circulation, takes place at a rate of about .25mm per day. It is a very slow process. Acupuncture helps to speed up the process by helping to set the proper environment by increasing circulation and reducing inflammation (and further damage) to the area. Acupuncture also helps keep the process going by activating proprioceptor nerves to continue signalling to the brain and immune system the healing and repair should continue. While acupuncture is very effective at this, it is a long process that requires dilligent treatment intervals.

Some tinnitus has been correlated with low aldosterone, and other hormone irregularities. This is an interesting finding because aldosterone is a hormone created by the adrenal gland that is essential for sodium conservation in the kidney. In Chinese Medicine, we relate the ears with the kidneys (have you noticed a similarity in their shape!?) - and actually, we can now see the direct relationship between the ears and the kidneys with embryology - they literaly split off from the same tissue in the developing fetus. Acupuncture will help improve adrenal and kidney function to help regulate these hormones, and often time we're able to see improvement with tinnitus as well as improvement in hearing.

When tinnitus and rining in the ears is related to soft tissue tension or injury, hypertenstion, or sinus related, we often see great (and usually quick) results from acupuncture treatment. When treating some of the more complex issues causing tinnitus and ringing in the ears, it's not alway clear on how effective acupuncture can be. I think it is always worth trying because I have seen incredible results over the years, but I always want to be transparent that sometimes we just can't seem to figure out an effective method to reduce or eliminate an individual's tinnitus.
