CIRS (Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome)

CIRS is chronic, biotoxin-driven inflammation that will not switch off — most often from water-damaged buildings. We remove the exposure and clear it in the right order.

When the Inflammation Never Switches Off

CIRS — chronic inflammatory response syndrome — describes what happens when the innate immune system, switched on by a biotoxin exposure, fails to switch back off in someone whose genetics make that toxin hard to clear. The inflammation becomes chronic and self-sustaining, producing a wide, multi-system illness. The body is not malfunctioning; it is mounting a real, accurate inflammatory response and then getting stuck in it.

This is the GoodMedizen lens. The body is not malfunctioning. It is responding accurately to the information it is being given. Change the inputs and the response begins to change with them.

What CIRS Actually Is

CIRS is a functional-medicine framework for chronic, biotoxin-driven inflammation. The most common trigger is exposure to water-damaged buildings and the mold and mycotoxins they harbor, though other biotoxins, such as those from tick-borne illness, can do the same. In people whose immune genetics cannot efficiently recognize and clear these toxins, the innate immune system stays switched on, driving inflammation across many systems. It overlaps heavily with mold illness — see our Mold Toxicity and Mycotoxins page — and CIRS is, in effect, the broader inflammatory syndrome that mold exposure so often sets off.

What Is Actually Driving It

  • Ongoing exposure to a water-damaged building or another biotoxin source
  • Immune genetics — certain HLA types — that impair toxin recognition and clearance
  • A stuck, self-perpetuating innate immune response
  • Disrupted regulation of the body’s inflammatory signaling
  • Blocked drainage and detox pathways, so the body cannot offload what it mobilizes
  • Depleted reserves from a long, grinding illness

Why It Gets Missed

Like mold illness, CIRS produces dozens of nonspecific, multi-system symptoms, so people accumulate diagnoses — chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, anxiety — while the underlying inflammatory driver and the exposure go unrecognized. It is also a contested and still-evolving framework, which means many clinicians do not look for it at all.

We treat the pattern seriously and pragmatically — find and remove the exposure, open drainage, calm the inflammation — and we are candid that this is an evolving framework rather than settled mainstream medicine.

Signs and Patterns

  • Persistent fatigue, often worse after exertion
  • Brain fog, memory lapses, and word-finding trouble
  • Headaches
  • Heightened sensitivity to light, smells, and chemicals
  • Muscle aches, cramps, and unusual or shifting pains
  • Air hunger or unexplained shortness of breath
  • Increased thirst and frequent urination
  • Mood changes
  • Symptoms that track to specific buildings or environments

How We Look at It — The Testing

  • The building — inspection and environmental testing of the home or workplace, the single most important step, since the exposure source is the finding that matters most
  • Mycotoxin testing — a urinary mycotoxin panel to identify the toxins present and the body’s burden
  • Inflammatory and innate-immune markers — hs-CRP, a CBC with differential for the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, and, where appropriate and in coordination with a physician, the inflammatory markers associated with the CIRS framework
  • The gut and drainage — GI-MAP through Diagnostic Solutions, since the gut and bile decide whether toxins leave or recirculate
  • Reserves and detox capacity — a comprehensive metabolic panel with GGT, 25-OH vitamin D around 60 to 70, a full iron and ferritin profile, B12 with homocysteine and MMA, and RBC magnesium
  • Overlapping burdens — heavy-metal testing through Quicksilver Scientific and tick-borne and viral markers, since biotoxin illness rarely travels alone

Broad baseline labs do not have to be expensive. Services such as Function Health let patients obtain large workups affordably, and we have no financial stake in that — we would rather your budget go toward care than toward lab markups. For targeted functional testing we order through Diagnostic Solutions (GI-MAP) for the microbiome, Quicksilver Scientific for heavy metals, and through Fullscript where it serves you best, with every marker read against optimal ranges rather than the wide line between “normal” and “abnormal.”

The Chinese Medicine Lens

Chinese medicine reads CIRS, like mold illness, as a deep accumulation of damp and toxic turbidity that has overwhelmed the body’s ability to transform and drain it — burdening the Spleen, clouding the clear yang that should reach the head, and obstructing the channels — over a foundation of real depletion from a long fight. Treatment drains the damp and resolves the turbidity without further exhausting the system, rebuilds the Spleen, and restores the reserves.

This is the same sequence functional medicine arrives at independently: drain and support before pushing.

How Acupuncture and Functional Medicine Help

Acupuncture supports drainage and detoxification pathways, calms an over-activated nervous and immune system, and helps with the fatigue, sleep, and mood symptoms while the deeper work proceeds.

The functional work follows a strict order, the same one mold demands: first remove the exposure, then open the exits and support drainage, fill the nutrient and antioxidant coffers, and only then mobilize and bind the toxins, reassessing at each step. This careful sequence is the heart of the GoodMedizen pathway, and with biotoxin illness it is not optional — pushing detox in a body that cannot eliminate is how people get hurt.

Care That Works With Your Other Providers

CIRS is often co-managed, and remediating the building usually requires an environmental professional. We coordinate with your physician and other practitioners, are glad to communicate directly, and never advise stopping a prescribed medication.

Your Body Isn’t Broken

If you have spent years being told your labs look normal while you clearly do not feel normal, you have not been imagining it. With CIRS, the work is to remove the exposure and clear the inflammation in the right order, never to force a detox the body cannot finish. Your body is not broken. The support has just been missing.

At GoodMedizen in downtown Seattle, we treat the system driving the condition, not only the symptoms it produces.
