Why You Feel Bloated After Every Meal

"Why am I bloated after every meal?" is the top specific health search in Washington State — and it makes sense. Bloating is one of the most common and most misunderstood digestive complaints. It is not simply about eating too much or drinking carbonated beverages. Chronic bloating is usually a signal from the gut that something upstream is not working: food is not being digested efficiently, gut bacteria are in the wrong place or the wrong ratio, or the gut-brain axis is dysregulated.

The GoodMedizen approach takes the gut seriously as a system. When the gut is inflamed, dysbiotic, or functionally impaired, it affects not just digestion but mood, immune function, sleep, skin, and hormones. Bloating is often the most visible symptom of a much broader pattern.

What Is Actually Driving It

  • SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth) — bacteria from the colon migrating into the small intestine, where they ferment food prematurely and produce gas
  • Low stomach acid (hypochlorhydria) — food sits and ferments rather than being properly broken down
  • Food sensitivities — lactose, fructose, gluten, and FODMAPs that are difficult to digest
  • Gut dysbiosis — imbalanced microbiome that generates excess gas and impairs motility
  • Slow motility — food moves too slowly, allowing bacterial fermentation to accumulate
  • Constipation — trapped gas with no outlet
  • Stress and cortisol — the vagus nerve connects the brain and gut directly; chronic stress slows motility and alters the microbiome
  • Functional dyspepsia — impaired stomach emptying that creates fullness and pressure

Signs and Patterns

  • Bloating immediately after eating or later in the day
  • Visible abdominal distension — the "food baby" that grows through the day
  • Excessive gas and flatulence
  • Abdominal pain or cramping with bloating
  • Constipation alternating with loose stools
  • Feeling full well after a meal has ended
  • Burping frequently after meals
  • Fatigue, brain fog, or mood changes that accompany digestive symptoms

How We Look at It — The Testing

  • GI-MAP stool testing (Diagnostic Solutions) — the most comprehensive functional stool test for pathogens, dysbiosis, parasites, and inflammatory markers
  • SIBO breath test — lactulose or glucose hydrogen breath testing for bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine
  • Food sensitivity panel — IgG and IgA food reactivity testing to identify dietary triggers
  • Comprehensive metabolic panel — liver enzymes, pancreatic function markers
  • Thyroid panel — thyroid dysfunction slows gut motility significantly
  • Nutrient assessment — magnesium, B12, vitamin D, and zinc are all essential for gut motility and mucosal integrity
We identify the root cause — SIBO, dysbiosis, food sensitivities, or motility issues — rather than just managing symptoms. This pairs closely with our work on SIBO and gut dysbiosis, IBS, and gut health and functional medicine.

The Chinese Medicine Lens

In Chinese medicine, bloating and distension are primarily a Spleen and Stomach pattern. The Spleen transforms and transports food; when it is weak, food stagnates and produces dampness and phlegm — the TCM equivalents of undigested matter and bacterial gas. Liver Qi stagnation, which arises from stress, over-constrains the digestive organs and is an extremely common driver of bloating in the Seattle population. Stomach Qi that moves upward rather than downward (rebellious Stomach Qi) contributes to bloating, belching, and nausea.

Treatment strengthens the Spleen, moves Liver Qi, resolves dampness, and restores the downward direction of Stomach Qi. The classical acupuncture points ST36, CV12, SP6, and LV3 are cornerstones of digestive treatment in our clinic.
