Our New Neighbors Seem a Little Stressed

Updated: Jan 16, 2021

Stress seems to have, insidiously over time, integrated itself into what is considered ‘normal’ as a way of life in today’s modern high tech world. Seattle is home to an increasing number of tech companies including Amazon.com which is transforming the landscape of the South Lake Union area just north of downtown Seattle. With increased numbers of individuals joining Amazon, many choose to not only work downtown, but also live downtown. Those individuals are, quite literally, neighbors of GoodMedizen.

What I have noticed in talking with our neighbors is that those in the high tech industry often endure prolonged periods high stress in their work. It seems to be a known entity in the workplace. As I think about the stories I have heard, it seems to me stress acts like a bully.

From a Chinese Medicine perspective, it is important to note that not everyone deals with stress the same way. Just like the bully on the playground when you were younger, some kids could stand up to the bully while others were tormented and may have had lasting impact on their lives. Similarly, while one individual in high tech may seem numb to the pressures and impact of stress, another may start to notice a change in their eating habits. Another may notice they are more irritable and anxious as a result of the increased stress. Yet another may notice that their sleep suffers.

Often someone will cope with stress, the best they can, with the tools they have available to them… until they are simply unable to cope any longer. That’s when many will start to explore options for help. Fortunately, acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine are powerful tools for supporting our ability to cope with the impacts of stress. Lifestyle and dietary suggestions also go a long way in creating a foundation that supports health and well-being. Of course, creating a supportive relationship early, before reaching the point of meltdown, is optimal.

We, at GoodMedizen are here to help our neighbors thrive. If you would like to know how acupuncture and Chinese medicine might support you, we invite you for a complimentary consultation. Think of it as an opportunity to get to know your neighbors.
